Hayao Miyazaki

Spirted away is written by and Hayao Miyazaki a famous director and creator of anime in Japan. Hayao Miyazaki was born in Akebono-cho part of Bunkyō-ku in China shown above. He is the second oldest brother of four, he attended Toyotama High School, and in his third year of high school saw Hakujaden which has become known as "the first-ever Japanese feature length color anime". This can be called his inspirtion for his interest in animation later in his life. He then went to Gakushuin University and graduated in 1963. Later that same year he started working at Toei Animation, working on Watchdog Bow Wow (Wanwan Chushingura).

An interesting feature of Hayao Miyazaki's works is his use of bildungsroman. Bilgdungsroman is german for "novel of personal development". Usually "is a novelistic form which concentrates the spiritual, moral, psychological, or social development and growth of the protagonist usually from childhood to maturity." In Spirted away this is clearly shown in the protagonist Chihiro. "She is forced to survive in a bizarre spirit world, andworks in a bathhouse for spirits after her parents are turned into pigs by the sorceress who owns it."

Another Trait of his works are his unique characters. While in other films there are clear protaginists and anatagonists in his films there are no clear distinictions. Instead his characters are capable of change, for example in Spirted Away the with Yubaba. Although she turns Chihiro's into pigs she still give Chirhiro a job and a chance to get her parents back. We also see she is not a truely evil character when we meet her baby Boh.
